    This query just crossed my desk (via @John Cline) and I thought I should share it with the experts in the ASM Residual Stress Technical Committee and the ASM Heat Treating Society. If you are aware of any work in this area, please post or message me.

    I am wondering if anyone has any experiences or references to share on the topic of induction heating to lessen residual stresses of welds in nickel-based alloys (specifically C-276).

    The nuclear industry conducted work on the topic for 300 series stainless steels (reference below) and showed that induction heating the outside of a pipe while simultaneously cooling the inner surface with water changed the inner surface weld residual stresses to be compressive. These residual compressive stresses in turn helped prevent intergranular stress corrosion cracking.
