Here is the letter sent to our membership requesting student participation.
Dear Future Residual Stress Enthusiasts,
We need your help! We are the ASM Residual Stress Technical Committee (RSTC), and we are looking for a mutually beneficial relationship with university students carrying out study or research in the area of residual stress or related phenomena.
The RSTC was formed in January 2020 to support and promote all things related to residual stress. We have about 90 members from industry, consulting, government, and academic organizations who are engaged in modeling, measuring, and applying residual stress, together promoting our understanding of this important technical subject. We have subcommittees that cover education, conferences, standards, and handbooks. A key aspect of our focus is outreach to students. Here is an opportunity for you to provide cutting-edge research results, discuss aspects of your work with experts in the field, explore career opportunities, and connect with mentors.
You could share your work with RSTC in two ways, via presentation at a monthly meeting or via a short write-up in our newsletter. We meet monthly through Ring Central on the third Wednesday of the month at 2:00 Eastern time, and we set aside time for a short (about 15 minute) technical talk. We also publish a newsletter quarterly. I've attached examples of our newsletter. We plan to start a new feature in our newsletter that makes it easy for students to highlight their work and begin to participate in the committee. We are soliciting names for this newsletter feature from our students along with content that is important to you. What do you want this feature to be called other than Students' Corner? The winning entry will be recognized! For content in this feature, do you have breakthrough research that needs to be publicized? Is there a nagging problem that our input might help? Are you looking for an outlet to discuss topics that are important to you? Please submit your ideas and we'll headline them in a publication that has wide readership.
Please send your submissions, comments, and questions to me. Please let me know if you simply want to join our committee for now, just to see what we do and the opportunities open to you. The only cost to participate in RSTC is your time in attending meetings.
Regards,
Beth Matlock Snipes
