In this talk, I'll provide an overview of the academic and research activities within the MSE department at Drexel University. I'll begin by providing some historical perspective on the department's evolution, from significant contributions to metallurgy within its first few decades to today's increasingly expansive academic and research agendas focused on engineering all different classes of solids to enable scientific discovery and technological progress across society. The distinguishing aspects of our MSE academic programs will be described, as will the current areas of research emphasis within the department. I hope to end the talk with an open discussion of the future of materials science and engineering as a discipline. How can the community raise its visibility to grow student populations to fill materials engineering jobs? Is the field conveying the positive impact that materials engineers make on society at large? How do we ensure that our discipline fits the ambitions of today's most motivated, curious, and enterprising students?
