Abstract :
Additive Manufacturing (AM) was founded a little less than forty years ago under the guise of rapid prototyping for the plastic injection molding industry. Since then, seven distinctly different technologies have been developed that build up a part, usually layer by layer, as opposed to conventional forming (casting, forging, sheet forming, etc.) or material removal (machining, grinding, blanking, etc.) processes. These technologies have sparked new life into: (i) materials science research because of the new microstructures that can be generated; (ii) mechanical design because of the unlimited geometric configurations that can be generated; and (iii) supply chain management because AM disrupts the usual flow of goods and capital. As a result, AM is being applied to every material class (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites) in very creative ways through applications from aerospace and outer space to biomedical and dental to food and fashion, and everything else in between. To illustrate, we will describe the role of AM in two disparate areas: medical therapy delivery and preparations for the transition from low earth orbit to Lunar and Martian settlement.
