Abstract: Making the Moon accessible from Pittsburgh
Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world. The company's suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals. Astrobotic was selected by NASA in May 2019 for a $79.5 million contract to deliver a suite of NASA instruments to the Moon. This mission will see the Peregrine lunar lander return America to the Moon with 22 payloads representing 6 countries. In June 2020, Astrobotic was selected for a $199.5 million contract to deliver the NASA VIPER rover to the lunar south pole onboard the Griffin lunar lander.
This presentation will discuss the challenges around building and commanding lunar landers from Astrobotic mission control right here in Pittsburgh. A brief introduction to spacecraft design, environments, and testing will be included. Materials used for primary structure, propulsion and thermal control will be covered in more detail. This will cover a wide array of materials (metallics to composites) and manufacturing technologies (conventional to additive).
Speaker: Pete Frye, Astrobotic Technology
Pete Frye is the Mechanical Systems Manager at Astrobotic. He is responsible for primary structure, mechanisms, advanced manufacturing, and material & processes for the company's planetary landers department. The final assembly and integration of the flight spacecraft is done right here in Pittsburgh. After growing up in Pittsburgh, he attended Drexel University where he graduated with both BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering. His career has been focused in aerospace, having spent time in design, analysis and technology roles in both aerospace structures and jet propulsion. His experience spans elastic, plastic, metallic and composite manufacturing. His latest work in lightweight structures and materials at Astrobotic is helping return America to the Moon with upcoming landings in 2021 and 2023.
