The San Fernando Valley (SFV) Chapter of ASM International Welcomes:
Hans Shin
Presenting
Outgas Screening of Materials for Space Application
Abstract
This presentation will include a brief overview of outgas screening of materials for space applications. Many types of polymeric and inorganic materials outgas in space, where the outgassing contamination may become detrimental to critical hardware and sensors (e.g. surface contamination, corrosion, etc.) in this extreme environment. Therefore, screening levels have been established by NASA for the acceptance or rejection of potential spacecraft materials. Techniques discussed will include methods for determining the Total Mass Loss and Collected Volatile Condensable Materials from Outgassing in a Vacuum Environment (ASTM E595) and for Contamination Outgassing Characteristics of Spacecraft Materials (ASTM E1559), along with common contamination species identified with supplemental techniques.
Bio
Hans Shin is the Laboratory Director at a materials testing laboratory. He has over 26 years experience in materials testing and failure analysis of both metallic and non-metallic materials, printed circuit boards and assemblies. His expertise includes materials characterization, failure analysis, metallurgical evaluation, thermal analysis, mechanical testing, chemical analysis, contamination and outgassing studies. He was also an adjunct lecturer in Engineering at CSUN and COC for over 10 years.
Mr. Shin obtained his B.S. in Environmental Toxicology (emphasis in Analytical Chemistry) from UC Davis and his M.S. in Materials Engineering from CSUN.
