Synthesis of Thermo Responsive AMP/PNIPPAm Hydrogel and its Antibacterial Properties

Abstract
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), Ampicillin were combined to prepare an interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel having dual functions of temperature sensitivity and antibacterial properties. The synthesis of AMP/ PNIPAAm was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FTIR). To endow the antibacterial properties, the ampicillin was loaded into the hydrogels. The antibacterial activity of the hydrogels was determined by the disk diffusion antimicrobial susceptibility test using gram positive and gram-negative bacteria. It was observed that microbes were sensitive to drug loaded hydrogels. It was seen that the inhibition zone varied by varying the temperature of incubation. It was seen that the inhibition zone was smaller in case of lower temperature and it increases with increasing the temperature. The inhibition zone was smaller in 30oC and it was maximum at 44oC.

Bhupinder Kaur is a graduate student in the Materials Engineering program at CSUN. She studied at M Tech in Nanotechnology in India. Afterwards, she worked as a research assistant at Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIO), a constituent unit of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) under the supervision of Dr Kamlesh Kumar (Senior Scientist) on smart materials. She is currently a research assistant in the Keck Advanced Materials Lab, conducting her research on corrosion of austenitic stainless Steels (304 and 316) and protected them using different inhibitors and passivation of surface, and synthesis of nanoparticles and then using them in hydrogels for diverse applications.
ESD Resistance Materials Application In Various Industries
Yazdan Zeinali
Materials Engineering Program
Cal. State University, Northridge
Abstract:
This presentation will discuss the use of electrostatic discharge (ESD) materials across different industries. Manufacturing of ESD resistance materials will be discussed on how to select the proper polymers and the role of carbon black in enhancing their properties. These ESD resistance plastics are essential in several fields, including packaging, automotive parts, and electronics, due to their ability to reduce static problems. Electric Vehicle industries growth demands for the ESD resistance materials/packaging becoming increasingly critical to expand their production.

Yazdan Zeinali is currently a graduate student in the Material engineering program. He is currently a Graduate Research Assistant at CSUN`s Keck Advance Materials and Corrosion Laboratory. He has a strong background in polymer science and engineering, with four years of industrial experience in the polymer industry. Some of his current projects include: the study of star-shaped copolymers for drug delivery, enhancing electrostatic discharge (ESD) packaging, and cathodic protection and vapor phase corrosion inhibitors to prevent corrosion in the oil industry.
