The San Fernando Valley Chapter of ASM International Welcomes:
Abstract
Racecars in racing leagues such as Formula 1, NASCAR, and INDY use a wide variety of engineering materials. Technological advancements in materials engineering have had a significant impact of the automotive racing industry in general. For instance, carbon fiber composites now compose roughly 85% of a typical F1 car today since its introduction by the McLaren F1 Team in 1980. However, various racing regulatory organizations have also restricted the use of specific materials to both reduce costs and level the playing field. Consequently, the evolution of the racing industry has also involved the continuous pursuit of superior materials and materials processing methods.Engineering materials will be discussed in the context of rules and regulations imposed by racing organizations. This talk will conclude with a high-level discussion of materials selection and material characteristic evaluation for race car applications. This talk is intended to convey the value in having a deeper understanding of materials engineering for undergraduates regardless of discipline of study and/or career aspirations!Bio
