Sacrificial Zinc Anode Cathodic Protection of Copper Tubing for Saltwater Pools
Abstract: Research and testing of zinc anodes for the cathodic protection of copper tubing was undertaken for the new product development of an inline anode for a residential pool company. While not a new technology in the pool industry or other industries, this was a new product and technology for the company. Testing was set up to prove the efficacy of zinc anodes in cathodically protecting copper tubing against corrosion and to gain a better understanding of the corrosion rate of the copper and the zinc anodes and the effect of anode size on protection. Control copper (C122) samples not protected by the zinc anodes and copper samples electrically connected to small and large zinc anodes were studied in varying concentrations of HCl. The weight of the copper and zinc anodes and voltage readings of the copper samples against a Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE) were used to evaluate the anodes and copper. The addition of the zinc anodes clearly proved to effectively protect the copper tubing against weight loss due to corrosion in the HCl solutions. The corrosion rate of the smaller anodes was higher than that of the larger anodes and closely followed an exponential trendline. In addition, voltage readings of the copper tubing followed expected trends, showing distinct and separate ranges for the voltage potential measurements of the unprotected and protected copper regardless of anode size.

BIO: Keena Holley is a Mechanical Engineer at Pentair Water, Pool and Spa, Inc. in New Product Development working out of the New Product Innovation Center in Apex, NC. She graduated in 2010 from North Carolina State University with dual degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. She has worked as a Quality Engineer with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Marietta, Ga as well as a Product Integrity, Product Development and Design Engineer with a small, private infant toy and product company in Atlanta, Ga. She currently resides in her home state of North Carolina.
