Purpose:

Critical Issue:  Due to a rapidly expanding body of knowledge in materials science and engineering, it is becoming increasingly difficult for individuals to master the full depth and breadth of knowledge to remain current in all aspects of science and technology.  

Value Proposition:  ASM International’s Life-Long Learning and Education help our members remain technically current so that they may advance their careers at any point in the professional life cycle and contribute to the continued growth and sustainability of the Materials Community.

Strategic Objective:  To define, develop, test, deliver, evaluate and market educational, training, and professional development programs, products, services and outreach opportunities that provide value to ASM members, enable the society to cultivate new members, and grow revenues.

Product(s) and Service(s) Awards Policy Committee is responsible for:

  • Using technical expertise in reviewing existing courses for potential revision
  • Using technical expertise in reviewing proposals and content for new courses
  • Identifying new markets and topics
  • Developing and supporting Association and International Chapter partnerships
  • Coordinating educational activities with ASM Affiliates and pertinent ASM Committees

Qualifications of Members:

Qualifying candidate must have:

  • interest in education and life-long learning
  • commitment to the Materials Science and Engineering profession
  • strong drive to deliver results according to plan and timeline
  • interest in strengthening ASM International as a professional society
Committee Size:
Up to 15

Time Commitment:
1 hour telecom every quarter, 1 face to face meeting per year (October for MS&T Conference) based on attendance at the conference, additional commitments based on tasks undertaken

Term Duration:
3 years.  September 1 - August 31.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Actively participate in all Education Committee meetings, as possible.
  • Provide input and participate in determining strategy and action plans.
  • Actively contribute to meeting committee objectives; assume responsibility and accountability for commitments.
Support of Committee Activities:

ASM Staff Liaison, Education Committee Chair, Vice Chair and Committee Board Liaison

  • ASM Staff Liaison and Education Committee Chair will provide an orientation and information prior to the beginning term date of September 1st annually.  In addition, the Staff Liaison participates and is an active partner in all meetings and activities of the committee.
