Topic: Materials that Make Football Exciting (and Safe)
Abstract: The University of Akron, in collaboration with the Cleveland Browns, offers a course titled Materials Science of Football. This course explores the evolution of materials used in football equipment and highlights Northeast Ohio's contributions to these advancements. Students engage in hands-on activities, including material fabrication and innovative equipment design, aiming to produce educational content accessible to diverse audiences.
In this presentation, two students will share insights from their coursework, covering topics such as:
- The origins and rationale behind the development of the center-to-quarterback snap.
- Materials that enhance helmet protection and the significant role played by the Cleveland Browns in improving helmet safety.
- The manufacturing process of nylon used in protective pads and footwear.
- The multifaceted applications of polyurethane in equipment safety and performance.
This session promises to deliver an informative exploration of the intersection between materials science and football, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the technological innovations shaping the sport.
