Topic: Heat Treatment Process Modeling and Industrial Applications
Speaker: Zhichao (Charlie) Li, Ph.D, MBA
Dr. Li is the President of DANTE Solutions, Inc., located in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a graduate of Harbin Institute of Technology, China, where he received his M.S. in Materials Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, then joined DANTE right after his graduation. Over the past twenty years, he has been primarily involved with finite element based heat treatment process modeling, including materials model development, data development, software development, licensing, and consulting services. With Dr. Li’s leadership and strong experience in modeling and metals thermal processing, DANTE software has become the leading software in the heat treatment processing modeling field.
Abstract
Heat treatment process modeling has been more widely accepted in manufacturing industry for product design, process design, and trouble shooting. One objective of this presentation is to introduce some basic aspects for modeling the quench hardening of steels, including the effects of quenching rate and hardenability on phases transformations, stress evolution, and distortion. Several modeling applications will be used to demonstrate that the heat treatment processes are not black boxes any longer. With in-depth understanding of the root causes of distortion during quench hardening, one patented process, DANTE Gas Quench Process (DCGQ), will be introduced, including the journey of prototype equipment fabrication and experimental results.
