    Hi Steve,

Plasma nitriding is a clean process. Unlike gas nitriding, the feed gases can contain nitrogen gas instead of ammonia. The plasma can easily break the bonds in the nitrogen and providing the species required for the nitriding process.  Hydrogen gas is also normally involved in the process, however, it is in such small amounts, and done in an oxygen deprived environment, there should be no risk of fire. Since all the gases are non-toxic, no special treatment of the air should be needed after the nitriding process. David Pye's book on Practical Nitriding has a good breakdown of the advantages of this process in comparison to others.

    Hope this helps,

    Tyler
