At present there are no specific tests to correlate weld metal fracture toughness with base metal fracture toughness in aluminum.  However, there are numerous correlations of fracture toughness with charpy impact toughness (CVN) for steels.  Basically the correlations are either the Barsom-Rolfe style where KIc = sq rt [4xCVNxE] or Roberts-Newton style  KIc = exp [CVN], both of which are accurate for the upper shelf.  However, for very tough aluminums like 1100, one doubts a CVN - KIc correlation can be established, but probably can for heat-treated 6061 or 2024 or other heat treated aluminums.  Kaufman has published values for aluminum base metals but not for weld metals; also KIcs are published in the ASM Handbooks.  I have developed a fracture toughness for steel which can either correlate by the CVN notch or precracking, but it is for steel, and was published in Welding Journal (called the Welded Notch Toughness Test).  I am planning to have it included as an ASTM standard.  Contact me at Chris.Hahin@Illinois.gov for further info or discussion.

Are KIcs for heat treated steel published in ASM handbooks? Which volumes?

ASM Handbook, Volume 19, Fatigue and Fracture, has a major section (collection of articles) entitled "Fatigue and Fracture Resistance of Ferrous Alloys." Some of the articles in Volume 1, Properties and Selection: Irons, Steels, and High-Performance Alloys, have fracture toughness data. Data books such as the Heat Treater's Guide and Engineering Properties of Steels also are good sources for properties of specific steels.

I'm not that familiar with Vol 19 but the older Aerospace Structural Materials Handbook had a lot of fracture toughness data in it.  Quite a bit on non-ferrous but some on the higher performance ferrous-based alloys.

    Just a warning.
All KIc-CVN relationships may work well for  usual microstructures. If the grain size of steels grows too much, let us say below ASTM number 4, the correlations may yield false results.
