  • 1.  Stellite 21 Investment Casting

    Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone has experience investment casting Stellite 21. I'm having issues with one part in particular--out of several other Stellite 21 castings which never have problems--an impeller the weighs approximately 20 pounds. I've seen frequent cracks in a couple different locations of the casting.

The alloy is melted in an induction furnace under an argon blanket, poured one at a time, and cooled slowly. The parts are heat treated and then machined, which is when cracks usually become apparent. I believe the problem stems from either casting or heat treat. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
Wondering who is casting Stellite 21. As you may know only Kennametal can manufacture Stellite 21 castings.
We can help you get the real Stellite alloy components if you want.

    Hi Matthew,

You are correct, the alloy is not "truly" Stellite 21, but rather conforms to AMS 5385H.
