Thermal desorption GC/MS should work. A small glass fiber matt is cleaned via heat then used to "mop" up residue. This is then placed in the instrument for analysis. GC/MS is very sensitive so doesn't need much to make an identification. A good chemical compound library is needed for searching unless you have a couple strong suspect. If there is a contract lab with this technique somewhat near you, they can send you heat cleaned matts in glass vials and a procedure to avoid contamination. We use this technique a lot to solve mysteries like this.
