  • 1.  Anodizing Processing Parameters → Defects → Discoloration?

    Posted 08-14-2023 01:41

    Hello!

I was hoping to ask about relationships between anodizing processing parameters and discoloration defects?

My main focus is for Al alloys but it would be interesting to know about this for Ti alloys as well.

I have been digging into literature but wasn't sure if there are any recommended references?

    Any information is appreciated!

You can search for anodizing information (for free) on FINISHING.COM . For example: https://www.finishing.com/447/78.shtml

    Kentaro,

What did you have in mind to learn? Did you have defects you are trying to find a root cause for? Or just generally learn?

Ted Short is considered to be one of the best anodizing experts and he has a defect guide you can review that may help.

A quick search for it and I found a copy at:  https://www.fot.de/uploads/docs/fehlermoeglichkeiten.pdf

More often than not, it is the alloy and manufacturing characteristics that influence coloring and not the anodizing process parameters. Various elements in aluminum, especially copper, contribute to color differences in anodizing. Heat treat temper is another influencer.

Anodizing parameters mainly influence finish quality and can create various unsightly defects, such as spangling and burning. Although improper color treatment, of course, can screw up the appearance from a coloring aspect.

If you are looking for something to read, I suggest checking out the Aluminum Anodizers Council website    https://www.anodizing.org/

Also, The Surface Treatment and Finishing of Aluminum and its Alloys by Sheasby and Pinner is considered to be a good reference book on the topic.

    https://www.asminternational.org/the-surface-treatment-and-finishing-of-aluminum-and-its-alloys-6th-edition/results/-/journal_content/56/06945G/PUBLICATION/

OK - a bit pricy at >$400 but supposed to be one of the best. I have partially worked my way through the copy I have at work and liked it as a reference.

Anne Deacon Juhl runs AluConsult, consulting on anodizing issues, but also has online classes, webinars, and a blog that may be worth looking into.

Light Metal Age is a good periodical with lots of good information. You can use the search option to find articles in individual magazines, but you will have to know what to search for or you may get buried in articles not related to your query.

Here is a good one to whet your appetite

    Hope these suggestions help!

    David,

Thank you very much for the detailed reply.

I am beginning to dig in further.

I am doing this more so for a friend.

    Thanks
