More metallurgical questions from my friend the old phonograph restorer.
"Zinc pest" is well known to antique collectors - in the early 1900s, zinc alloys used for die casting toys and small parts had lead and other elements which caused intergranular corrosion. The parts crack and swell and disintegrate. My friend has a theory that lead oxide mold release agents were also a culprit. We can find references to "white sand" used but nothing definitive. Any leads?
