ASM is proud to present the revised ASM Handbook, Volume 12: Fractography, an essential resource on all aspects of fractography for materials evaluation, failure analysis, and quality control.

Volume 12 Print | Digital Edition

The new Volume 12 offers comprehensive information on fracture types and appearances, visual examination techniques, imaging methods, quantitative fractography, surface profiling, and fractal analysis. It details the morphology of fracture surfaces at various scales, highlighting markers and patterns that reveal insights into fracture causes and processes. Additionally, Volume 12 explains how loading conditions, operating environments, and material properties affect fracture modes and mechanisms in materials such as cast irons, steels, nonferrous alloys, plastics, ceramics, polymer-matrix composites, and welded or soldered joints.

This edition's significantly expanded coverage of fractography, with 17 new material-specific articles, necessitated dividing the 1987 edition into two volumes. This led to the development of the standalone ASM Handbook, Volume 12A: Atlas of Fractography, scheduled for publication in 2025.

One of the many highlights in the updated and expanded fractography coverage in Volume 12 is the article:

Russell J.H. Wanhill, Omid Oudbashi, Fractography of Ancient Metallic Artifacts, and Restoration and Conservation Aspects, Fractography, Vol 12, ASM Handbook, Edited By Craig J. Schroeder, Ronald J. Parrington, Joseph O. Maciejewski, James F. Lane, ASM International, 2024, p 49–63, https://doi.org/10.31399/asm.hb.v12.a0006841

This article is free to read and download in the ASM Digital Library through 2024.

@Omid Oudbashi is Chair of the ASM Archaeometallurgy Committee. Russell Wanhill has contributed several articles to the ASM Handbook and Advanced Materials & Processes Magazine.
