I'm fully retired now. I use my 47-year experience as a senior scientist/inventor in diverse industries and also as an international consultant in materials science/chemistry to provide mentoring to graduate students and early-career scientists. In my opinion, trends that should be watched closely include additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence. Both trends will continue to have huge impacts on materials science, including the discovery of new materials/processing methods. AI will also impact future job prospects in some areas.

Thank you for sharing your insights and for continuing to mentor future materials scientists. Additive manufacturing and AI are definitely two areas that will shape the future of the field in significant ways.

Your point about the impact on future careers is especially important as the next generation prepares for a rapidly evolving industry.
