    Sponsoring Company: Materion Corporation

DATE & TIME: Thursday, August 17 10:00 am (Eastern)

    MC: Bob Braughler

    Speaker: Dr. Andreas Frehn

    Description:

Hydrogen is becoming a more common choice for energy technology because of its lower environmental impact when compared to conventional fuels. However, hydrogen also causes issues in materials exposed to it, such as hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement may cause a decrease in the toughness or ductility of a metal so that it takes less stress for cracks to appear. Materials exposed to hydrogen in service must be able to perform without becoming embrittled. Only a small amount of data is available that discusses the resistance of copper alloys in a hydrogen environment. However, several high-strength, Cu-based alloys were recently tested using suitable test methods. In this webinar, attendees will learn about:

    ·         High-strength copper materials and their property spectrum and application fields

    ·         Why hydrogen is a problem for materials, what influence parameters exist and what effects hydrogen embrittlement can have

    ·         Methods for the investigation of hydrogen sensitivity

    ·         Selected results for high-strength Cu materials and comparison with other material families

    ·         Outlook on ongoing and future investigations

    Speaker Biography:

Dr. Andreas Frehn is Materion's Director of Technology and Innovation for Europe and the Middle East. He studied metallurgy and material science at RWTH Aachen University in Germany and later got his PhD on the subject of formability of modern austenitic stainless steels. Dr. Frehn has worked in materials development and applications throughout his career. Prior to Materion, he was the Head of Global Materials Technology at Benteler Automotive in Germany. With Materion since 2020, Dr. Frehn is responsible for ongoing research and development on various topics and applications, including hydrogen.
