As someone who came to materials in a mid-life career transition, what are the best trainings and resources you would recommend to help someone accelerate a career working primarily with steels?

For a little context, my B.S. was in mathematics, and my M.S. was in mechanical engineering, though my thesis was in materials (but not specifically metals).  But I know that I am well behind someone that came up through a metallurgy and metals based program. I try to monitor Connect and the weekly updates are super helpful.  It is how I start my week.  But I am also looking for recommendations for classes (I'm slowly working my way through the ASM catalog) and publications that may be helpful.

I would recommend that you start with relevant volumes of Metals Handbook. They cover vast areas of metallurgical knowledge and easy to read. More in-depth understanding can be accessed via references in that particular topic.

    Good morning Ratnesh,

Thank you so much for your advice.  We have most of the volumes available in the lab where I work.  I've slowly started going through them and they are an excellent resource.  I will continue to leverage them for advancing my knowledge and depth in the field.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

    Very respectfully,
    Ashley Maxson

    Dear Ashley,
There is a lot of material in metallurgy from Dr. Bhadeshia in Youtube, mostly related to steels. See for example the following course:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBVN2XQPLhk&list=PLj4YiOgq320onCH7PDcSX1ANV35QrU7LX

It is introductory material, but good enough for the basic concepts.
Reading good Physical metallurgy books are the following steps to understand the area.
    Regards.

    Good morning Mario,

Thank you so much for the youtube link; I am excited to work my way through many of the videos in the Steels 2022 playlist.  I will also start doing research to add any Physical Metallurgy books I can find to our lab collection.

I greatly appreciate your time and recommendations; I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

    Very respectfully,
    Ashley Maxson

    Hi Ashley,
While Ratnesh and Mario have wisely suggested you relevant resources, I would suggest you to look for "metallurgy for non-metallurgist" or "steel metallurgy for non-metallurgist" in the ASM catalog. This course (both book and lectures) are aimed at educating metallurgy to those not from this field. You may choose to study only those relevant to you from this flagship programme of ASM.

    best regards,
    nirav.
