I'm curious whether anyone read our article on Sustainable Tonewoods in the AM&P July/Aug issue, and if you've used materials selection software for problems outside of your employment. Particularly, in the arts arena. Anybody?? Thanks. -

Thank you. Guitar string materials selection and design is another very interesting topic.

ASM members who are interested in this topic may want to attend the Sustainable Materials & Processes sessions at IMAT 2023. One of the talks, by Dr. Bridget Ogwezi, will address use of ANSYS Granta MI software for managing materials data for sustainability. (Jim and @John Wolodko used the ANSYS Granta Selector software for the analysis in the article.)

Jim has been involved in meetings to develop the ASM Sustainable Materials Engineering Committee, chaired by John Wolodko. ASM Members who are interest in joining this committee can contact me or John Wolodko.

Great article!   ASM gave me permission to use it as a case study for my ME450 Materials Selection and Specification course next winter, along with the article on battery recycling.

Haven't got to the article yet (it is sitting in my read pile). We had several Capstone projects and then continued research on developing a substitute composite for Honduran Rosewood used in marimbas. The work has successfully led to a product that is musically similar. Other projects we have undertaken has been reed material replacement due to the disappearance of reed  plants due to global warming.

That's fantastic, Robert. I'd like to hear more about this study.
