Can anyone recommend a good software for modeling the liquid metal profile and solidification segregation of various materials during vacuum arc (VAR) melting?  Many thanks in advance...

    Dear Joseph,
We use MagmaSoft for casting and solidification simulations at Missouri S&T. As any other sim software, it has some limitations, but you can use it for approx. predictions.

Thank you Mario – just to confirm, you use that for VAR furnace modeling?

I have experience using MeltFlow-VAR. This product is by Innovative Research LLC. http://inresllc.com They also make a package for ESR that is very similar. This has been around for many years and there are a fair number of published articles discussing the results.

Joseph, are you looking for macro or micro-segregation?  For the latter, CALPHAD based tools such as Thermo-Calc can give you more information on the chemical inhomogeneity during solidification.

    Dear Josef,

Microstructure prediction during solidification can be well solved by PhasePot software (is comercial: https://phasepot.com/software).

    With very best wishes,
