Martin,
I believe what Jim is saying, very kindly, is that your question as such cannot be answered. The answer is the lived experience of each member of the community. Do you really expect anyone to be able sum that up in a post? If that is your passion, I suggest you spend the rest of your life interviewing people and documenting everything you can. It will be fantastic resource for future generations, though it will be out of date by the time it is published.
I will take a shot at answering your questions for this "person who really makes the world go around" though, with the understanding that it is definitely not my experience or role. Maybe it can be the first entry in your book? Humor is probably one of the things that makes the world go around, gravity may be a close second.

Hi Jim,
Then maybe it's time to start climbing before we run out of the people who really make this world go around.
Best regards
Martin

ASM Community - What are your thoughts on the many and varied routes within materials science you would recommend for a rewarding career?
Regarding career I'm talking about job satisfaction, opportunities for development and diversification and of course salary expectations.
What are the qualifications needed in different disciplines. Is it possible to achieve a successful career without a university degree? What are the routes to this? I did it so can others.
