  • 1.  Very low temperature notch toughness for A537 Cl2

    Posted 09-08-2023 10:09

    Hi Experts,

I am weighing use of CS vs Ni steels at temperatures colder than -60C ...upto -70C for pressure vessels that could be 3.5"-4.125" thick.

Seems  A537 Cl2  may be a difficult prospect but I do see some test data for Q&T CS from ASM references stating its possible (ofcourse  I wouldn't know the thickness). An alternative would be to use Ni steels but that, apart from expense, have a low limit on high side design temperature (A203 is an option but wouldn't be suitable for sour service, which is the case here). Wondering if anyone had good experience with using A537 or other CS at very low temperatures and high thicknesses.

    Appreciate your thoughts regarding this.

Have you considered a higher strength material? On the Norths Sea platforms EN 10088 P500QL2 is frequently used on first stage separators with sour service requirements. You might find European steelmakers like AcelorMittal/Industeel, Dillinger and Voest Alpine   have this type of steels available under ASME SA533.

    Good hunting
