Cost: Dinner will be free for the first 30 students and accompanying teachers who register, or $10 for members, retirees, teachers, parents, and additional students.

Chairman's Message:
This month’s program is part of our chapter’s continuing commitment to student education at the high school and college levels. In addition to Students’ Night, we offer funding for ASM Teachers’ Camps, and provide a grant to cover the travel expenses for one or more high school students to attend the summer ASM Materials Camp, all as funds permit. We sponsored no Materials Camp attendees this year, but the Students' Night talk would normally begin with a presentation by one of the attendees describing his/her experiences.
Dr. Pond is an excellent speaker, and we have enjoyed his student night visits to our section for many years, continuing the tradition begun by his father that spans over fifty years.
Although high school students, college students and teachers are specifically invited, his presentations are always interesting and accessible to all. This month's program is sure to be no exception.
About the Presentation:
This talk is directed to high school students and teachers, although everyone should find the presentation interesting, is a participatory lecture with demonstrations and exhibits of many facets of metallurgy. Professor Robert B. Pond, Sr. of Johns Hopkins University devised his Fun in Metals talk for the young at heart and gave this lecture more than 600 times all over the world. His son, Dr. Robert B. Pond, Jr. follows in his father’s footsteps in presenting educational lectures on metallurgy. You will be taken on this romp through many well known and little understood facts of metallurgy, things we all have seen and few have noticed.
Questions asked and answered include: What is a metal? Where do metals come from? Why are metals strong? Why are metals weak? What is an alloy? What is microstructure and how does that always influence properties? Can metals make noise? Can they remember? Can they contract when they are heated? What are metal atoms like? How do they connect? What is anisotropy and allotropy? Is there a future in metals?
About Our Speaker:
Dr. Robert Pond, Jr., Fellow ASMI, has been involved in materials and metallurgical engineering fields for more than fifty years. He has worked in research laboratories including the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground and for numerous industries. He has taught at the U. S. Naval Academy, for the American Society for Materials International (ASMI), and he retired last year as a full-time Associate Professor of Engineering at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore.
He ran a utility industrial laboratory for nuclear and fossil engineering and has participated in the analysis of more than a thousand engineering failures for industry, the government, and in litigation, testifying as an expert witness in court venues more than 150 times.
