ASM International is hiring for two exciting summer internship positions at our headquarters in Materials Park (Novelty), Ohio - and we're looking for talented students right here in our own backyard. If you're connected to undergrad or graduate students in materials science, engineering, data science, or related fields, we'd appreciate your help in spreading the word.
Two Roles, One Great Summer
Materials Science & Content Intern (2 positions, onsite or hybrid). This role is perfect for students curious about digital publishing, AI tools, and making technical knowledge more accessible. Interns will create and verify alt-text for engineering images using generative AI-meaningful work that improves accessibility and supports the larger field of AI-assisted publishing. Projects might also include metadata development, subject tagging, and XML quality assurance. Strong candidates are detail-focused juniors, seniors, or graduate students in materials science, metallurgy, technical writing, data science, or related fields.
Data Science Intern (1 position, hybrid). This position provides an in-depth look into applied AI and search technology. Interns will work directly on ASM's AI-powered search system - analyzing embedding models, improving content quality across search indexes, and building LLM-powered data enrichment pipelines. It offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with production RAG systems and large-scale vector search. Ideal candidates are final-year undergraduates or graduate students in data science with strong Python skills and a genuine passion for AI and language models.
Both positions run May 18 – August 7, 2026, and pay $15–$20/hour. Start and end dates are flexible.
Why ASM?
ASM International is the world's largest professional society dedicated to materials science and engineering. Our digital resources - journals, handbooks, databases, and more - are used by engineers and researchers worldwide. Our interns will be shaping how that knowledge gets organized, discovered, and delivered.
How to Apply
Both positions are posted on Handshake. https://app.joinhandshake.com/e/205200
