Presentation Abstract:
This presentation will focus on the "Boronizing" case hardening heat treatment process also known as Boriding. This process involves diffusing boron into the surface of ferrous, nickel-based and cobalt based materials to create subsurface metal-boride compound layers. These metal-boride compound layers have exceptionally high hardness (>70 HRC) and are used in severe service applications to protect against extreme wear and abrasion. The presentation will discuss the basics of boronizing and microstructures of various metal boride compound layers, show lab testing results for wear and erosion resistance, along with discussing different applications and case studies in industries that have used boronizing to extend component and product life.
Presenter: Craig Zimmerman earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been working in the heat treatment industry since 1994 in a variety of roles. Craig joined Bluewater Thermal Solution's corporate staff in 2010 and is currently serving as their corporate Director - Technical. He is also recognized worldwide as a leading expert in boronizing/boriding technology and has been responsible for several technical advances and increased usage and acceptance of boronizing across several industries. Craig led Bluewater's efforts towards developing BOR-1Cr tubing which is boronized 1Cr steel tubulars used as long life production tubing in oil wells.
